It is our aim to produce a soft-top Land Rover conversion as close the mid 1990s North American Specification
Defender as possible. There are a few areas we have managed to improve
upon such as the sealing of the canvas around the doors. We have set
out to replicate the NAS 90 with the utmost attention
to detail and to the extent that we feel the standard of finish and
quality of components used are unrivalled. The
basic conversion includes a roll cage built for us by Safety Devices,
the original builder of the factory fitted roll cages and
Europe’s largest roll cage manufacturer. The cage has a full
external front hoop to protect the windscreen which is chassis mounted,
the intermediate hoop behind the driver and passenger is located into
the rear body with heavy duty brackets and a matching rear hoop is body
mounted to support the canvas and give the vehicle it’s
traditional styling. All the hoops are tied together with horizontal
and diagonal tubes to provide strength.

The canvas is made from black ‘Mohair’ although several
colours are available. Mohair canvas is a fade and stretch
resistant material favoured by the likes of BMW and Mercedes for their
soft tops and the canvas is available with or without windows. The rear
and sides can be rolled up providing a good draught leaving the top for
shade or in case we have a shower of rain. The entire canvas can be
removed in minutes and folded into the rear or left at home. Refitting
it takes just a few minutes.
The
hardware to attach the canvas to the vehicle is produced to allow
original Land Rover door seals to be used providing a water tight seal
where the door shuts against the canvas, ‘Tenax’ clutch
type stainless steel poppers are used to hold the canvas to the body,
these are top quality marine application fasteners that put no strain
on the canvas at all during removal and re-fitting. The gripper rail
along the windscreen is from Land Rover parts and seals excellently
against wind and rain.

A
new interior light is installed in the original rear view mirror
location, sun visors can be repainted and trim sections are fitted to
cover the visor fixings, a new self adhesive mirror is fixed to the
windscreen.
For
Defenders converted from a Hard Top or Station wagon we suggest a swing
away tail gate with an attached swing away wheel carrier, this is also
an option for vehicles that are converted from pick ups. Also a high
level brake light can be fitted to the tail gate, this is not be
recommended on a drop down tail gate.
Options include NAS type lights, load space mat and Rear step tow bar. We have also produced full NAS spec conversions on 110 Hard Tops and Station Wagons. Please contact
the specialist sales department for more details and a price for your
conversion.
