40 Series Landcruiser
Back in 1951 Toyota produced the first Landcruiser, the 25 Series, I guess we will never see one in the flesh so we will start with the 40 Series. Produced from 1961 to 1984. This is the classic Land Cruiser. It is a two door with removable hard and softop. Early models had a 3 speed gearbox that was replaced in 1974 with a 4 speed box and in 1983 with a 5 speed. It was produced with several engine types. Early FJ40s were fitted with the 3.8 litre 6 cylinder petrol 'F' engine. In 1974 FJ40's were fitted with the 4.2 litre petrol '2F' engine. Diesel engines in BJ40's were the 3.0 litre 4 cylinder B engine and 3.4 litre 3B fitted between 1978 and 1985 as far as I know.
The 40 series is the short wheel base, available in hard and soft top. The 43 series is a medium wheelbase also available in hard and soft top. The 45 series was available in Troop Carrier and Pick Up versions, all with numerous detail variations over the years.
As far as we at Frogs Island 4x4 are concerned these great old Landcruisers are classic 4 wheel drives along with Series 1 Land Rovers and Military Jeeps. They are rare in England, the ones that are here find their way into collectors hands some of which restore to standard trim, others enhance them to suit their requirments like the white BJ40 featured here that we have spent so much time creating.
